1.
Assigning appropriately challenging pieces or tasks that build on prior knowledge and stretch the learner with a new concept. (e.g. using a familiar piece to work on a new pedaling or finger technique)
2.
Keeping learners engaged by introducing stories and characters together with new concepts
3.
Dividing the lesson into sections to work on individual topics such as technique, note reading, theory. Then, combining these concepts to perform the piece
4.
Creating a positive learning environment where learners are encouraged to be curious and motivated to succeed
Why?
1.
Associations between episodic memory, emotional memory and working memory and has been proven to help retrieval of information. This is why I often engage with the learner and seek to develop a positive relationship! This makes lessons so much more fun and interactive, motivating he learner to want to improve.
2.
A positive learning environment is key. I encourage family involvement so the family can bring a similar energy back home to facilitate practicing. I strive to make us all feel like a team, working together to reach one goal - improvement in our playing!
